North Sails: News Details

Irish National 18 Championship

Judith Wilkinson

Sponsored by North Sails.

The National 18 Irish Championship took place in Cork Harbour over the weekend. North Sails sponsored the event and donated a mainsail as one of the prizes. It was won by Stephen O'Shaughnessy on 'Virtual Reality' by an untraditional method in that it was decided in advance that for Race Four of the series the person who finished in tenth position would be awarded the prize!

Kieran Dwyer sums up the racing over the two days for us:

What a weekends racing! From moderate to fresh on Saturday and gale to perfect conditions on Sunday.

Saturday's OD's, Andrew Crosbie & Paul Tingle, did really well to get 4 races off in a breeze that would not behave south of Roches Point for the 19 entries. Close racing had 3 Blind Mice with the first bullet, GBU with the second, Clea with the third and Das Boot with the fourth and after a couple of protests and one redress, it was all to play for on Sunday.

A good night was had by all in The Beach Hut at Salve Marine, a great party lasted till the small hours.

Strong wind postponed racing until the afternoon on Sunday and John Crotty, our OD for the day, gave us two great races in perfect conditions on the bank, Clea with a win in the first and GBU in the second.

So it is congratulations to Winners 367, Clea, Bryan Hassett, Sandy Remington and Nicolas O'Leary. Second 362, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Ewen Barry, Stan Browne & Dion Barrett. Third 372, 3 Blind Mice, Nick Walsh, Rob Brownlow & Conor O'Kelly. Second, third and forth finished on equal points!

The winners raced using a North spinnaker and the boats placed in 2,3 & 4 all sported a full inventory of North sails!
