North Sails: News Details

7/4/2013

International 14 German Open Championship

Tammo Baldszun

From the 7 to the 9 June the German Open Championship in the International 14 Class took place in Flensburg.

The Competition was tight, 23 Boats lined up for 8 Races and until the final day the top 3 Teams were even on points. In the end GER-230 with Axel Reinsch and Leith Shenstone managed to take the title by a 5 pt margin from last year's champions Georg Borkenstein and Eike Dietrich on GER-28. While GER-230 uses a full North Sails Inventory, GER-28 has a North Main and Gennaker.

The conditions on the Flensburg Fjord ranged from 5 to 15 knots and Axel Reinsch reported that they were able to maintain a good speed in 5 knots to take first place in the first race but also to finish first in 13 knots of breeze during race 5. Admittedly they had to find the groove to always sail fast with their sails which they did by adding a practice week just before the event.

Their solid series (they could discard their single 10th place), never finishing worse than 4th place, secured their first position on top of the Leaderboard.

Second Place went to longtime Champions Georg and Eike (partial Inventory) and 3rd to newcomers in the class, Jan and Hannes Peckolt (quite used to sailing fast Skiffs!). 4th Place went to Oliver Voss.

Congratulations from North Sails One Design and the North Sails Team in Hamburg to A. Reinsch and L. Shenstone on “Goldfinger”!

Thanks to Sören Witt for the photos.
