NORTH SAILS COWES WEEK SHINES BRIGHT
The world’s leading sailmaker helps iconic regatta come roaring back as a British classic for its Bicentennial.
More than 600 yachts racing across 37 classes over seven days on The Solent in blazing sunshine is quite the spectacle. As North Sails Cowes Week celebrated its 200th anniversary, there was a sense on the water and on the pontoons that the event was back at its prime as the world’s largest and best-known annual regatta. The universal buzz and infectious energy from the thousands on the start lines and in Cowes’s narrow streets all suggested that North Sails Cowes Week is once again a staple of the British summer sporting scene.
From the competitive racing to the camaraderie onshore, North Sails Cowes Week is truly unique. There is so much activity both on and off the water that it's more appropriate to call it a “festival of sailing” rather than a regatta. One of the week's early standout moments came on Sunday, when Her Royal Highness Princess Anne fired the starting cannon from the Royal Yacht Squadron. Things only ramped up from there, with a midweek blowout North Sails party, culminating in the famous North Sails Cowes Week fireworks (back after a long hiatus) to close out the competition on Friday night.
Each day delivered frenetic yet friendly racing, with North Sails highly visible both on and off the water. A remarkable number of North Sails employees took part in the regatta, either racing as North Sails experts supporting clients, servicing sails, or keeping the many shoreside logistics humming along. Fittingly, the North-powered XOD Lone Star came out on top as the Overall Winner of North Sails Cowes Week 2026. Additionally, North-powered boats claimed many of the event's most prestigious trophies, sweeping the podium in ten classes and finishing in the top three in at least 23 classes.
Behind the scenes, the North Sails loft was busier than ever, providing tireless service throughout the week. The team completed work on 95 sails and logged more than 155 service hours during the regatta alone, a significant increase over last year's 70 sails and 100 hours. Those figures tell only part of the story, with the weeks leading up to the event seeing a steady stream of sails arriving for inspections, adjustments, and performance checks, ensuring customers were ready to make the most of every race.
Daily, North Sails brought competitors together for its increasingly popular post-race debriefs, combining expert analysis with a relaxed social atmosphere. Class specialists reviewed the day's action from inside their respective fleets, with former J/70 World Champion Charlie Cumbley dissecting the J/70 racing and sail designer Rich Bell sharing insights gained while competing in the XODs himself. Through video analysis of starts, mark roundings and standout examples of sail trim and boat handling, sailors gained valuable lessons they could immediately put into practice. Coupled with the daily Move of the Day award and podium presentations, the debriefs became a must-attend fixture of the regatta and a great example of North's commitment to helping customers get more from their racing.
Every day held its own highlights, with excellent racing and special moments. However, North Sails Day on Wednesday featured an especially busy agenda, including a high-adrenaline kitesurfing demo from the North Actionsports team off the promenade. And the day wrapped up in style with the North Sails party for hundreds of competitors, with revellers dancing into the night courtesy of the infamous apres-ski DJs from La Folie Douce.
