WHY NORTH SAILS ARE ALL IN
This World Oceans Day, North Sails is going all in to protect the ocean’s giants. In partnership with IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare), we’ve helped develop a new version of the Whale Alert App—empowering a global community of ocean-lovers to share sightings, prevent strikes, and save the whales.
We owe our livelihood—and our joy—to healthy seas. The new Whale Alert update, which now includes European waters, is just one way we can all play a part in protecting these seas well into the future. Every sighting you log feeds more accurate speed limits and routing changes that stop deadly ship strikes.
Protecting whales protects the health of the seas. And reducing the risk of ship strikes keeps sailing crews and their boats safe from injury or damage.
WHY WHALES MATTER
A single whale stores tons of carbon and fertilizes phytoplankton that make over half the planet’s oxygen.
Their migrations spread nutrients, supporting fish stocks and coastal communities.
Fewer than 370 North Atlantic right whales remain; slowing vessels is the fastest way to tip the odds back in their favor.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Whether you like to get out on, in, or simply enjoy the water from the beach, there’s a way for all to play their part.
SAILORS AT SEA
Download Whale Alert before you cast off. Log every whale you see; sightings trigger temporary, voluntary speed restrictions or advisory notices. Share the link with your fleet—more data means safer passages.
SURFERS ON THE BEACH
Keep the app open while you wait for the next set. Spot a spout? Report it. Coastal records guide shipping lanes. Post your sighting with #SaveTheWhales and tag @NorthSails.
CITY OCEAN LOVERS
Follow the live whale map and spread the word. Review your online deliveries—choose slower, sea-freight options where you can. Lend your voice: forward this page to friends who sail, surf or ship.
