Whilst Ian only formally joined North Sails recently in 2022 he has really been part of the North family since his 470 sailing days with the late Jonny Merricks in the
1990s.

A double Olympic silver medallist (470 and Star), Ian skippered the British America’s Cup team ‚GBR Challenge‘ in 2002 and became the first British sailor to win the Volvo Ocean Race as skipper in 2015. An accomplished helmsman, Ian enjoys the tactician role and has recently focussed on Fast 40s and the superyacht scene. He also still regularly races dinghies, coaches and enjoys supporting or racing with his youngest daughter Emmy.

Ian Joins North Sails after 5 years at the Royal Yachting Association where he oversaw great success in Tokyo as the Director of Racing / Performance Director of the British Sailing Team. He is passionate about youth sailing and trying to find ways to grow the sport. „Sailing has been so good to me that I would like others to enjoy the fun that I have had. I have never been fussy about what boat I sail, for me the enjoyment is in the racing and the camaraderie. I am really looking forward to working at Norths surrounded by people that I can learn more from about this great sport“
