Mike started sailing when he was seven, going through the Learn to Sail Program out of North Cape Yacht Club in Lasalle, MI. He enjoyed it so much, he moved right into fleet racing in the 420. He raced in college for the University of Toledo, where his team qualified for Sloop Nationals, which was one of his most memorable college sailing experiences. Later, he raced in PHRF with his dad on the family’s Pearson 30 and Melges 32. His big-boat racing experience expanded just as his sail production and graphics career progressed. “It’s pretty incredible to think something up, look at it on a computer, and then make it into something that works on a boat.”

Still sailing PHRF today, Mike also races in One Design classes including the Tartan 10’s, Snipes, Thistle, and Lightning. He thrives on being able to sail with, and learn from decorated sailors like Skip Dieball and enjoys travelling to regattas around the country where he can meet people and learn more.

When asked about what he enjoys about working for North Sails, Mike adds that the education and continual advancement in technology is something that excites him.

“I have learned more from North than I have with any other sailmaker, as far as technologies that are being used and implemented. Learning how it works,  not just that it does work. It is awesome to learn the entire process from start to finish.”
