Mike Toppa’s first job after college was with North Sails in Annapolis, where he learned spinnaker design while pursuing his goal of winning the America’s Cup. Three years later, Mike’s designs were on over 50% of the fleet and he won the Cup with Dennis Conner’s team. He went on to sail in six more America’s Cup campaigns and won again in 1992, making him a two-time AC Winner, as designer and trimmer.

Mike has done many of the world’s toughest offshore events, including multiple transatlantic races and a Whitbread campaign with Chessie Racing. Besides the one design sailing he does currently, Mike is a regular on the Superyacht circuit and likes applying his vast performance sailing knowledge to bigger boats. Mike is currently very active in the Grand Prix, Superyachts, and Classic Yacht segments.

“Because of their size, it can sometimes be more of a daunting task getting a 100’+ boat to sail more efficiently. But when you break it all down, the concepts are the same whether the boat is 40’ or 140’ long. And the bigger the sail, the more 3Di molded sail technology makes a difference.”
