CUSTOM PERFORMANCE SAILS FOR ISLAND PACKET BOATS

Island Packet Yachts Sails by North Sails

Island Packet built its reputation on solid, comfortable bluewater cruisers designed to look after their crew on long passages. Models such as the Island Packet 320, 350, 370, 420 and 465 share generous displacement, a protected keel and a cutter rig that keeps sail handling manageable when the wind builds and the crew is small. Many are still crossing oceans decades after they left the yard.

North Sails designs every Island Packet sail around that rig and the sailing you actually do. Coastal cruising asks for durable, easy-handling cloth, while extended passages and ocean crossings reward constructions that hold their shape mile after mile. We build mainsails, high-cut yankees, inner staysails, furling genoas, cruising spinnakers and furling reaching sails to suit either.

Every sail is built to the specification of your exact Island Packet rather than a class average, so it sets correctly from the first hoist and keeps the boat balanced as you reef. Where original measurements need confirming, your local loft can check the boat in person before anything goes into production, giving you an inventory that holds its shape and stays easy to handle season after season.

ISLAND PACKET FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A:

There is no fixed price, because every sail is built to your exact Island Packet specification and the cloth you choose. A single mainsail for an Island Packet 320 sits well below a full cutter inventory for a 465. Tell us your model and how you sail and request a quote for an accurate figure.

A:

The cutter setup works as a pair. A high-cut yankee and an inner staysail let you reduce sail quickly as the wind builds without losing balance, and each is shaped to complement the other and the mainsail. We design the combination together so the boat stays balanced through the range.

A:

Yes. Many Island Packets carry a boom-mounted staysail that tacks itself, and we shape the sail to suit that arrangement and your existing hardware. Share the details of your setup when you request a quote and we will build the sail to work with it rather than around it.

A:

Usually, yes. Older sails stretch and go full, which costs you pointing ability and drive in lighter winds. A correctly shaped main and headsail restore that, and a furling reaching sail such as a code zero adds real power when the breeze drops. Your local loft can advise on what suits your boat.

A:

It depends on how far you sail. Woven Dacron gives proven durability and value for coastal cruising, while NPL laminates and 3Di OCEAN hold their shape for longer on extended passages. Most Island Packet owners cruise seriously, so we usually narrow it to two options. The sail material guide explains the differences.
