Austin started his sailing career at Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville, VA, racing Optis and Laser Radials in the FBYC junior race program and sailing with his parents on their cruising boat. The sailmaking industry was always on his radar. He served as captain of the Christopher Newport University’s Varsity Sailing Team and in 2017 received the Robert Purrington Award from the Mid-Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association, which recognizes a graduating senior who has made outstanding contributions to college sailing.

Following up a college internship with Ullman Sails, Austin took on a combine sales and design role within that company. While he was repairing, selling, and designing sails, he continued to race multiple one design classes at Fishing Bay Yacht Club, sailing his foiling Waszp, and growing his big boat skill set.

As part of the North Sails team of experts in Annapolis, Austin works with both one design classes and the local PHRF fleets. He is excited to work on growing North’s presence in Virginia and expanding the customer service offered to Southern Bay sailors.

During his introduction to North Sails, Austin visited the 3Di manufacturing center in Minden, NV and recalls his first thoughts on seeing the 132,000 square foot facility. “It was insane…It is the biggest sail loft you can ever imagine. When I saw the 3Di molds, that was it, I was sold right away.”
