Sustainability

Healthy Ocean. Steady Winds.

North Sails is the sailmaking industry’s leading and largest brand, and we have an opportunity to have a positive impact. The ocean is our source of life and it’s what keeps us in business. To ensure a healthier ocean and to keep us sailing in this awe-inspiring environment, we are committed to making changes to our products and operations, as well as advocating for the health of the seas, winds, and life on earth.

Planet

Earth is our home and we need to look after it. That’s why we’re partnering with like-minded, forward-thinking citizens and organizations to reduce our environmental impact. Through cutting edge recycling research and development, and constant investigation of future manufacturing and material usage, we’re constantly working to protect our most precious resources.

Product

We design sails to last. The take-make-waste culture needs to stop and North Sails is leading the way in the sailmaking industry. Using state of the art technology, we manufacture products that not only outperform the competition but also have unsurpassed longevity. Our sails are tested and proven in some of the most unforgiving environments, so no matter where your passion lies, you can have confidence in what you hoist.

Our People

People

People are at the heart of everything we do, and taking care of our employees is paramount to our culture. We operate our seven wholly owned manufacturing facilities worldwide, where health and safety standards are a priority. Our Safety Committees monitor and maintain occupational safety and health standards that equal or exceed the best practices in the industry. Just like a sailing crew, our team is what makes us great and many of our environmental initiatives—like vertical gardening at our manufacturing facility in Sri Lanka—were spearheaded by our employees.

our commitments

Reduce Emissions From Our Business Operations

North Sails is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. Starting in 2023, we will measure direct and indirect carbon emissions from our operations, so we can make informed decisions on how to reduce our carbon footprint. Where possible, we are committed to purchasing renewable energy tariffs and increasing our onsite renewable energy generation. By continuing these practices, we are determined to achieve our goal of increased usage of renewable energy at our manufacturing facilities to 80% by 2030.

Be A Leader In Responsible Product Innovation

North Sails has always been at the forefront of technological advances in sail manufacturing. We’re utilizing this same approach to find solutions for sail recyclability, low-impact manufacturing, the use of alternative fibers, and opportunities for material circularity. In 2022, we started conducting lifecycle analyses of our manufacturing processes to find ways to decrease our carbon footprint, pollution, and waste without compromising performance or longevity of our products.

GIVE BACK to the ocean

The ocean has always been our source of livelihood, as well as a playground for our customers and employees. Our Beach Clean Up program involves employees, along with local yacht clubs, to help keep our coastlines clean. And through North Sails Apparel, we partner with organizations like the Ocean Family Foundation and Coral Gardeners to fund conservation programs and marine research around the world.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call to action for all countries and nations to unite in a common goal. They comprise of 17 interlinked global goals that act as a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. The SDGs provide an opportunity to turn our vision into reality by focusing our goals and giving direction to our initiatives. SDGs are the cornerstone of any serious sustainability initiative and we’ve worked hard to incorporate them into our plan where we can have the most impact.
