Since 1988, Alby has held almost every position within the loft: sailmaker, service manager, project manager, sales consultant and sales manager. Getting a job as a sailmaker was a great way to get into competitive sailing on a full-time basis. Dealing with a great group of people and the best technology make it better still!

High-profile projects include Wild Oats, and two Whitbread races, which also afforded him the opportunity to meet sailors from all over the world. On the flip side, repairing blown out spinnakers during the Whitbread was less than fun.

Asked for a key piece of advice he’d offer youth sailors, Alby says, “Never be afraid to ask a question.”
