North Sails sailing clothing includes technical apparel and accessories designed for different demands on the water, from coastal racing to extended offshore passages. Jackets, pants and bibs, base and mid layers, and accessories make it possible to build a sailing outfit around the weather, activity level and time spent at sea. Waterproofing, breathability, durability, low weight and freedom of movement play different roles according to the intended use, making the choice of technical sailing apparel an important part of preparing for time on board.
Not all marine clothing delivers the same performance. North Sails differentiates its technical ranges according to the type of sailing and the level of exposure to the elements: a short coastal trip places very different demands on clothing than several days spent offshore.
Inshore sailing clothing is designed for coastal sailing and racing, where movement on board is frequent and conditions can change quickly. Low weight, high breathability and mobility are key considerations alongside protection from water and wind. The aim is to reduce weight and bulk without sacrificing the features required for variable conditions.
As duration and exposure increase, priorities change. Offshore sailing clothing is designed for situations where protection, comfort and reliability need to be maintained for longer periods. For ocean passages, cold and very wet conditions and prolonged exposure, Ocean gear provides the highest level of protection in the collection, with particular emphasis on waterproofing, breathability and durability.
The right sailing gear therefore depends not simply on the season, but on where you sail, for how long and at what level of intensity.
Sailing jackets form the outer layer of the clothing system and meet different requirements according to their construction. Choosing the right one means evaluating protection from wind, spray and rain while also considering how long exposure is likely to last.
In wet conditions and on longer trips, waterproofing and breathability become key priorities. North Sails uses technical materials and waterproof, breathable membranes, including GORE-TEX-based solutions, in its more protective constructions, combined with design details intended to reduce water entry while supporting comfort during activity.
In less demanding conditions, a lighter construction can instead provide greater mobility and comfort. The key is to select the level of protection actually required: a jacket for intensive coastal racing has different requirements from an outer layer intended for long hours in wind and rain.
The lower body is particularly exposed to spray, wet surfaces and contact with equipment on board. Sailing pants and bibs therefore complement the protection provided by the jacket and should be selected according to similar usage criteria.
A sailing bib provides more coverage than conventional pants and is particularly suitable for more exposed conditions. The Performance collection includes dedicated Inshore, Offshore and Ocean bibs, reflecting the need to adapt construction and protection levels to different sailing environments.
Here too, waterproofing, breathability and freedom of movement need to be balanced. The longer the exposure to cold and wet conditions, the more important a higher level of protection becomes, while low weight and mobility take greater priority during more intensive activity.
An effective sailing outfit involves more than outer protection. Base layers and mid layers make it possible to manage comfort, temperature and protection separately, adapting clothing to conditions rather than asking a single garment to perform every function.
These layers form the foundation of a modular clothing system. Next to the skin, the base layer supports the body during physical activity; an intermediate layer can then add insulation when required. The outer layer is selected according to exposure to wind and water.
In warmer weather, requirements change. UV protection clothing provides a specific solution for sunny, warm conditions: choosing suitable styles means considering their UPF rating and the level of UV protection offered by different fabrics. For dynamic activity on deck, Deckwear provides additional options for matching clothing to the intended use.
When temperatures fall or conditions become more variable, boating clothing can be layered flexibly with sweatshirts, fleeces or vests. This makes it possible to adjust insulation and protection while maintaining comfort and freedom of movement during different activities on board.
Accessories are also part of a complete sailing gear setup. Their function complements the main garments and depends on conditions and activity on board. Sailing hats and caps add protection from sun and wind, while sailing bags and backpacks help organize and transport the equipment required before and during a trip.
Choosing professional sailing clothing means building a coordinated system rather than focusing on a single garment: technical layers for comfort, jackets and pants or bibs for outer protection, and accessories selected for the activity. The result is a setup that can be adapted to the duration and physical intensity of the trip and, above all, to the expected conditions.
