North Sails Softshell jackets are designed to combine protection and freedom of movement during activities on the water. Technical SoftShell+™ fabric combines a three-layer laminate construction with windproof, breathable and water-resistant properties while remaining lightweight and comfortable. The collection includes Softshell jackets and vests for different sailing requirements, providing versatile options when protection from wind and spray is needed without the bulk of a more structured outer layer.
The SoftShell+™ material used in the North Sails Performance collection is a technical three-layer laminate. The knitted outer face has a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish, while the middle layer incorporates a breathable, waterproof membrane. Inside, a microfleece structure helps reduce water absorption and trap air and warmth without adding unnecessary weight.
This construction allows Softshell fabric to combine several functions within a single layer. The fabric is windproof and breathable, while the outer surface provides additional protection in light rain and spray. Four-way mechanical stretch also supports freedom of movement, an important advantage during dynamic activities such as sailing.
Construction details further contribute to the functionality of these technical Softshell jackets. The range includes shaped collars, technical closures and solutions designed to provide a close fit and reduce exposure to the elements. The combination of laminated construction, stretch and low weight makes softshell a versatile choice when both protection and mobility are important.
The choice depends primarily on the level of coverage required and the expected conditions. A sailing Softshell jacket covers the arms and therefore provides a more complete option when wind and lower temperatures require additional coverage. A Softshell vest leaves the arms free, reduces bulk and continues to protect the core. Both options make it possible to adapt clothing to activity levels and layering requirements.
Softshell jackets differ from other types of technical jackets. When the main requirement is a lightweight barrier against wind, a windbreaker may provide a simpler solution. When exposure to rain and water is greater, a rainproof sailing jacket is more appropriate because its construction is specifically designed around this type of protection.
The versatility of a Softshell jacket allows it to form part of a flexible clothing system. In milder conditions, it can serve as an outer layer providing protection from wind and spray. As conditions change, it can be integrated into a more comprehensive combination of technical layers.
When building your setup, start with the expected conditions and required protection level, select from the different sailing jackets, and complement the upper body with sailing pants or bibs. The broader sailing clothing collection also makes it possible to coordinate different technical layers and accessories.
Softshell jackets and vests therefore have a particular role in sailing gear when freedom of movement, wind protection and moisture management are needed in a less structured construction than outer layers developed for more demanding weather conditions.
