2019 CANADIAN OPTIMIST NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Optimist Sailors Gather At Britannia Yacht Club In Ottawa
From Wednesday August 14th to Tuesday August 20th, 2019, the Britannia Yacht Club, in partnerships with the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association (CODA), was proud to host the Canadian Optimist National Championships. This year we had 140 sailors from across Canada, as well as teams representing Antigua, Bermuda and China. The participants in this regatta ranged from 8 years of age to 14. We were very excited to have 20-green fleet sailors on course this year. For all of these “green”sailors this was their very first time participating in a National event. Not only did young sailors have an opportunity to develop their racing skills and meet new friends, they learned that even in light wind it is possible to have fun on the race course. Our amazing team of race committee volunteers made their event even more memorable by serving BBQ hotdogs to them on the water, between races. CODA uses the Canadian Opti Championships to choose the top sailors from the championship fleet to represent Canada at international events for the following year. This is a highly competitive fleet with some great young sailors that will be representing our country in 2020 and years to come. An event like the Opti Canadian’s could not happen without the support of amazing sponsors. This year North Sails provided the content for the “best swag bag ever!” This was a quote that we heard from the competitors more than once. North Sails also made us miniature Opti sails that were given to each sailor, these sails were a huge hit. After all sails were measured in, our lead measurer spent the rest of the regatta “stamping” the mini-sails to make them “legal” as well. Thank you very much North Sails for your support! You helped make the 2019 Canadian Optimist Championships a fun and exciting event.
