CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE: HAFZAL HANIFFA WINS THE 2025 RICHMOND AWARD

In a testament to a remarkable career defined by dedication and innovation, Hafzal Haniffa, Head of Logistics at North Sails Sri Lanka, has been honored with the prestigious 2025 Richmond Award. This annual accolade, named in memory of Sam Richmond—a promising young star at North Sails who tragically lost his life in a yachting accident—recognizes outstanding contributions within the company by persons under 35 years old.
When one thinks about sailmaking, shipping and logistics are likely not at the top of one's mind. Yet, it is a critical function that operates primarily behind the scenes. As Head of Logistics, one of Hafzal's standout achievements is designing and implementing a comprehensive global shipping system, built to gather data and provide visibility across our primary stakeholders. By leveraging actual freight data and performance metrics, he transformed insights into a powerful negotiation tool, strategically securing more favorable rates locally and globally, resulting in significant cost savings of close to a million dollars. Further, his optimization of global freight routes led to enhanced efficiency across the board.

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, LEADERS RISE TO THE TOP:
Hafzal's journey from an Import Specialist to Head of Logistics at North Sails Sri Lanka is a testament to his hard work, creative mindset, and leadership. His career at North Sails began in 2016: "I had just finished school and was working part-time at a bank in trade services," Hafzal shared. "Transitioning to North Sails as an Import Specialist was a significant shift, but it allowed me to streamline processes and take on more responsibilities in export operations and logistics."
Over the years, Hafzal's role evolved significantly. He took on export and local BOI operations responsibilities, ensuring transparency and efficiency in a free trade zone. His leadership skills became evident as he mentored future team leaders and fostered an environment of operational excellence.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges but also served as a pivotal learning experience for Hafzal. "The pandemic disrupted supply chains, but it also taught me resilience and the importance of finding alternative solutions," he said. His ability to navigate global issues, such as the Red Sea transit delays and recent tariff changes for the North American market, underscores his adaptability and strategic thinking.
His approach to problem-solving is rooted in data-driven strategies, as Hafzal explained, "I work with a lot of facts and data to identify areas for improvement. For instance, we reduced freight costs for one-design sails by analyzing historical data and negotiating better rates."

A LEADERSHIP STYLE ANCHORED BY SELF-MOTIVATION:
Hafzal Haniffa is recognized for his innovative contributions to North Sails and his exceptional leadership and mentorship. Self-motivation, empowerment, and a supportive environment that fosters growth and operational excellence are the foundations of his leadership approach.
One of the core principles of Hafzal's leadership style is self-motivation. He believes that the best results come from individuals driven by their goals and aspirations rather than external pressure. "I don't like it if anyone is pushing me. I don't think you'll get the best out of me. But when left to my own devices, I will figure things out and do more than my capacity," Hafzal explained.
This philosophy extends to his team. He encourages his team members to take initiative and solve problems independently. He provides direction and support but allows them the freedom to explore solutions. "I tell them this is where we need to go and encourage them to figure it out. If you fail, don't worry, we can figure this out together," he said.
The positive and collaborative culture at North Sails deeply influences Hafzal's attitude at work. He appreciates the supportive environment at North Sails, which encourages self-motivation and innovation. "North Sails has a super cool culture; it's friendly and gives positive energy. We are not the typical corporate atmosphere," Hafzal noted.
North culture allows Hafzal to foster a sense of togetherness and mutual support within his team. He believes the global platform at North Sails, where everyone supports each other, is crucial for success. "The global approach helped us a lot because we were together. It was more like let's help each other and try to accomplish this together," he said.

MENTORING FUTURE LEADERS AND CELEBRATING SUCCESS:
Hafzal's approach to mentorship is both strategic and nurturing. He understands the importance of gradually introducing new team members to leadership roles and responsibilities. "When there is someone new to the team, I first tell them to plan a lunch out or a fun activity where the whole team can go. I give them small tasks to familiarize them with leadership and take baby steps," Hafzal shared.
As team members become more comfortable, Hafzal introduces them to more complex problems and projects. He emphasizes that failure is part of the learning process and reassures them that he will take the blame if things go wrong.
Hafzal believes that celebrating successes publicly is essential for building confidence and motivation. "If you try something new and it doesn't work, then there's no risk because there's no blame for it not working. But if it succeeds, then we make sure we celebrate that publicly," he explained.

Hafzal lives in Sri Lanka with his wife and young daughter. He enjoys spending time with his family on weekends.
