OLYMPIAN AND WORLD CHAMPION RETURNS TO NORTH SAILS TO SPEARHEAD ONE DESIGN GROWTH ACROSS NORTH AMERICA
Dave Hughes Joins North Sails as North American One Design Manager
North Sails brings Dave Hughes onboard as the new North American One Design Manager. A multi-time Olympian, World Champion, and longtime North Sails collaborator, Hughes brings unmatched experience and passion to the role. His journey with North began at the San Diego loft over 20 years ago, and now, after decades of racing and coaching at the highest levels, he’s back to help shape the future of One Design sailing.
For Hughes, this move isn’t about timing; it's about returning to a brand that is a part of his sailing DNA. “It’s less of a ‘why now’ and more of a it’s good to be back!’ I first worked at North Sails under the mentorship of Vince Brun and other legends. Coming back to North in this new role is the right fit,” he explains.

Hughes has clear objectives: reinforce what’s working, identify areas for improvement, and open the door to new projects. His ultimate goal is simple yet ambitious: “Continue to build the fastest sails.” Initially, he will focus on classes racing in Miami this winter, including Etchells, Melges 24, and J/70, while also aiming to support smaller, developing one design classes across where he believes the sport can grow.
From learning to sail in Maine to competing in Olympic campaigns and world championships, Hughes has done it all. His resume speaks for itself: two-time US Olympian and Olympic Team Coach, World Sailing Vice President, and World Champion titles in the Melges 24, J/70, Etchells, 6 Meter, and J24. He has coached a 505 World Champion, earned more than 20 National and North American titles, six Olympic Class World Cup wins, and has been a five-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year finalist. He holds degrees from the University of Southern Maine and the University of Wales in the UK. Reflecting on his journey, Hughes says, “I can’t quite figure out if I’m a dinghy sailor who happens to race keelboats, or a keelboat sailor who happens to race dinghies.”

Hughes has aligned with North Sails throughout his competitive career, and he knows what sets the brand apart: “North Sails wins more regattas than any other sailmaker.” He believes fast sails create a positive feedback loop for sailors at every level, giving them confidence and accelerating learning.
Paul Hobson, Global Head of One Design, shared his enthusiasm for the appointment: “Dave’s experience and leadership will be a tremendous asset to our One Design program. His passion for the sport and commitment to excellence align perfectly with the North Sails mission to deliver world-class products and support to sailors worldwide.”
With Hughes at the helm, North Sails is set to strengthen its One Design presence across North America and continue delivering innovation, speed, and unmatched support to sailors everywhere.
