CUSTOM PERFORMANCE SAILS FOR SWAN BOATS

Swan Yachts Sails by North Sails

Nautor Swan has been building bluewater yachts in Finland since the 1960s, and the range covers a lot of ground. Comfortable cruisers such as the Swan 48, 55 and 65 sit alongside the ClubSwan racing line, and earlier Swans are still sailed and raced in numbers, so requirements vary widely from one owner to the next. Some are cruised gently around the coast, while others are campaigned hard at Swan regattas around the world, and the sail plan has to reflect that.

North Sails builds Swan sails for both ends of that range. Cruising owners get durable mainsails, furling headsails and easy downwind sails built to be handled shorthanded, while ClubSwan campaigns and regatta boats get racing constructions in NPL laminate or 3Di designed to hold their shape under load. Code zeros and asymmetric spinnakers are available for either.

Every sail is built to the exact specification of your Swan and its rig, whether it is a current model or an earlier design no longer in production. Your local loft can confirm the measurements in person before the build begins, then inspect, repair and recut the inventory as it ages, so the yacht keeps sailing the way it was designed to.

SWAN FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A:

It depends on the model, the inventory you need and the construction you choose. A cruising mainsail for a Swan 48 is a very different figure from a full racing wardrobe for a ClubSwan. Tell us your yacht and your plans and request a quote for an itemized price.

A:

Yes. Earlier Swans are still sailed and raced in numbers, and being out of production is no obstacle. We build to your exact model and rig, and your local loft can confirm measurements in person where original records are limited.

A:

One design racing rewards shape consistency, so sails are built to the class rules and to a shape you can repeat from one sail to the next. Our one design team can advise on what works for your class and level of racing. Start by browsing the One Design range.

A:

Yes, and it is a common request. A well-specified laminate or 3Di mainsail and furling headsail will cruise comfortably and still hold their shape on a start line. If you race seriously we would usually add a lighter headsail or a reaching sail rather than compromise the whole inventory. Your local loft can help you decide.

A:

For coastal cruising, woven Dacron gives durability and value. For longer passages or regatta sailing, NPL laminates and 3Di hold their designed shape considerably longer, which is what you feel on the helm. The sail material guide sets out the trade-offs.
