Tartan has been building cruising and racing boats in the United States for decades. Classics such as the Tartan 34 and 37 still sail in numbers and remain competitive on handicap, while later models including the Tartan 3700, 395 and 4300 carry carbon rigs and more powerful sail plans that load the sails differently. That spread means an inventory built for one era of Tartan rarely suits another, even where the boats look similar on paper.

North Sails builds Tartan sails for both. Coastal cruising calls for durable cloth and straightforward handling, club racing rewards shape that holds as the breeze builds, and plenty of owners want one inventory that does both. We build mainsails, furling genoas, working jibs, asymmetric spinnakers and furling reaching sails in Dacron, NPL laminate or 3Di. Cloth is chosen to match the rig you have.

Each sail is built to your exact Tartan model and rig, including older boats no longer in production, so it fits properly rather than approximately and keeps the helm balanced as you reef. Your local loft can confirm the measurements first, then inspect, repair and recut the sails once they are in use, season after season.

There is no fixed price, because every sail is built to your exact model and the cloth you choose. A replacement mainsail for a Tartan 34 sits well below a full inventory for a 4300. Share your model and how you sail and request a quote for an accurate figure.

A:

Yes, and they are among the boats we build for most often. Being out of production is no obstacle because we build to your exact model and rig rather than the original builder's records. Your local loft can measure the boat where those records are thin.

A:

Later Tartans carry carbon spars that load the sails differently from an aluminium rig, so shape stability matters more. Laminate or 3Di constructions hold their designed shape longer under that load while staying easy to handle. The sail material guide explains the differences.

A:

One design classes are a core part of what we do, and sails are built to class rules where they apply. Check the current range in the One Design shop, and if your class is not listed, request a quote and we will confirm what we can build.

A:

It depends on the balance between cruising and racing. Woven Dacron is durable and good value for coastal sailing, NPL laminates hold their shape longer, and 3Di offers the best shape retention if you race. Most owners land on one of two sensible options once we know how they sail.
